Depression: Unipolar & Bipolar Disorders
End : 11 Mar 2008 - 17:00
This one-day seminar gives an overview of depression with a specific focus on the presentation of both unipolar and bipolar depression and current management of depressive and manic phases.
The introductory sessions place depression within current psychiatric practice, give definitions, classification systems and criteria for diagnosis. The overlap and distinctions between unipolar and bipolar disease are clarified and the challenges of differential diagnosis are explored.
The patient perspective is examined in sessions where sufferers of both unipolar and bipolar depression discuss their experience of their condition and its therapy.
Current pharmacological treatments are reviewed and along with psychological and physical treatments, give a complete overview of therapy options in depression today. In addition, novel agents in development will be presented.
Clinical research in depression is challenging. A clinical trials session will address issues such as commonly used scales and their application, informed consent in psychiatry, entry criteria and optimising recruitment into studies.
This course is highly interactive, and uses small group work, led by eminent psychiatrists, to clarify clinical and therapeutic questions for clinical researchers.
