ABHI Export Club: Australia and New Zealand
End : 9 Jul 2009 - 14:00
July’s Export Club will focus on Doing Business in Australia and New Zealand. The meeting will take place on 9 July 2009 from 12pm until 2pm at ABHI’s offices, London.
Background on the Australian Healthcare Market
Australia represents a large and highly advanced medical device market. The country has a large number of medical device manufacturers, although these tend to be relatively small and concentrate on niche markets. Australia has a range of modern and sophisticated health facilities, and despite its geographical remoteness, represents a healthy market for imported medical equipment and supplies; around 85% of medical products are imported, principally from the USA.
Background on the New Zealand Healthcare market
New Zealand represents a small but highly developed market for medical equipment. The country has a well-developed health infrastructure, and facilities are of a generally high standard. The election of a Labour Party-led coalition government in November 1999 has produced a further overhaul of the healthcare system, and the Party was subsequently re-elected in July 2002. A series of reforms are in the process of implementation, comprising some major structural reorganisation such as the abolition of the Health Funding Authority in 2001, in a move towards more de-centralised healthcare provision with the increased responsibility of District Health Boards, but the shift is not of the same radical nature which the country has undergone in the past.
